The basic characteristics of insulation material include: Appearance properties, electrical properties, thermal properties, mechanical properties, chemical resistance, climate change, etc. These properties are mainly depending on its chemical composition and molecular structure.

From the point of view of future trends, the further development of resistance requires high pressure, high heat level, environmental protection, corrosion resistance, water resistance, oil resistance, cryogenic, radiation-resistant and flame-retardant insulation products.

Some common basic characteristics are described below:

Appearance, density and size

General appearance is tested by its visual, density is generally tested by the drainage method. The size is tested by the micrometer, vernier, Michi and other measurements methods.

Insulation resistance and resistivity

Resistance is the inverse of conductivity and the resistivity is the resistance per unit volume. The resistance of the conductive material will be bigger, If the conductive is smaller, both related to the reciprocal. The users of insulation materials always want the resistivity as high as possible.

Relative dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent

When the insulating material used for electrically insulating between each of the components of electrical network,

or as a dielectric of the capacitor (storage), they all require to have a small dielectric loss tangent.

Breakdown voltage and electric strength

When Insulating material failure occurs in a certain field strength, it’ll lose its insulation performance, that is called breakdown and the voltage in that situation is called breakdown voltage. When the breakdown occurs the voltage of every thickness unit has to withstand and that is called electrical strength.

Tensile strength and flexural strength

The maximum stress sample can withstand in the Stretching and bending load tests, and the two mechanical properties of insulating materials is the most widely used for test its properties.

Resistance of burning

Refers to the insulating material to resist or prevent contact with the flame continues to burn  or stop burning when it leaves the ability of flame.

Arc resistance

In the test, we will use low current of high voltage AC ,with the help of the high voltage, there will be a electric arc between the electrodes, the time of the Conductive layer forms will determine the arc resistance of the insulation material. Time is longer the resistance will be better.
